Peer-Reviewed Study Highlights MyHealthNB's Impact on Patient Empowerment

2026-05-20

New research published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research (JMIR) highlights the positive impact MyHealthNB is having on patient engagement and health system outcomes in New Brunswick.

Led by Dr. Paula Voorheis, alongside Dr. Carolyn Steele Gray and Frances Bruno, RN from Sinai Health and the University of Toronto, and Dr. Stephan Dombrowski from the University of New Brunswick, the study explored how New Brunswickers experience and use the province's personal health record.

The researchers found that access to personal health information through MyHealthNB helps people better understand and manage their health, prepare for appointments, communicate more effectively with healthcare providers, and take a more active role in decisions about their care. Participants also reported fewer unnecessary phone calls, duplicate tests, and avoidable visits, benefiting both patients and the healthcare system.

The research was supported through a Mitacs Elevate Postdoctoral Fellowship and represents a collaboration between the University of Toronto, Sinai Health, the University of New Brunswick, the New Brunswick Department of Health, and VeroSource. Implemented by the Department of Health using the VeroSource platform, MyHealthNB continues to demonstrate how thoughtfully designed digital health solutions can empower patients while improving the delivery of care.

Congratulations to Dr. Voorheis and the entire research team on this important contribution to digital health research.
